3(-1 - 8i) + 2(4 + 3i) =

treat (i) as you would any variable:

-3 - 24i + 8 + 6i =

5 - 18i

The only difference to remember is that i = SQR(-1), so if you multiply two terms containing (i), then (i)(i) = -1.
