the wording is confusing, but i think the equation would be written as 6x - 17 = 4x + 11

we need to isolate the variable, x, to find the number

first, add 17 to both sides to get 6x = 4x + 28

next, subtract 4x from both sides to get 2x = 28

now divide both sides by 2 to get x = 14
