need to solve for touchdowns scored by jerome and jake

 

jake and  jerome scored a total of 16 touchdowns.  Jerome scored one more than twice the number of Jake's touchdowns.  How many did each score?

Let x = number of Jerome's TDs, y = number of Jake's TDs.

1) x + y = 16

2) x = 2y + 1

substitute eq(2) into eq(1):

(2y - 1) + y = 16

3y = 15

y = 15/3 = 5

using eq(1):

x + 5 = 16

x = 11

check using eq(2):

11 = 2(5) + 1

Jake has 5 TDs

Jerome has 11 TDs
