I assume you mean this: 

[(1/4)x² + (3/2)x + 3] + [(1/2)x² - (1/4)x - 2] 
= (1/4)x² + (3/2)x + 3 + (1/2)x² - (1/4)x - 2 {took out brackets} 
(3/4)x² + (5/4)x + 1 {combined like terms}
