2y+y=3

First, you want to combine like terms.  The only variable in this problem is y, so let's combine our y's.

2y+y=3y.

So here's our equation after combining like-terms.

3y=3

We need to separate our y so that it's by itself, so the only way to do that is divide by 3 on EACH side.  So:

3y/3=y, and 3/3=1

The answer to our equation is y=1
