( y^2 / (y - 8) ) + ( (y - 72) / (y - 8) )

The denominators are both (y - 8), so you can just add the numerators like this:

(y^2 + y - 72) / (y - 8)

The top factors like this:

(y + 9)(y - 8) / (y - 8)

The (y - 8)'s cancel, leaving us with:

y + 9
