Well you start by taking the problem and seperatring it like so,

x+8=13

x+8 is one side and 13 is the other the x needs to be alone in order to do so you must do the opposite,

x+8=13

you are going to subtact 8 from 8 which would get the x alone and x would = 13
by
x+8=13

=13-8

x = 5
