48 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3

60 = 2 * 2 * 3 * 5

The GCF is made of the factors that appear in 96, 48, and 60.  Each of those numbers (96, 48, 60) has two 2's and a 3, so the GCF is 2 * 2 * 3 = 12.
