6-1x0+2/2

1x0=0

2/2=1

now you have:

6-0+1

work left to right and since there's no point in having the zero, it's now:

6-1= 5

  • The answer is seven.
The details are as follows: Order of operations puts multiplication and division before the subtraction. There are no parenthesis, but they aren't needed. If they were there, the answer would be the same, but it would look like 6 - (1 x 0) + (2 ÷ 2) = 7.
  • Does this help?
by

Simplifying
6 + -1 * 0 + 2 / 2 = x

Multiply -1 * 0
6 + 0 + 2 / 2 = x

Anything times zero is zero.
6 + 0 + 2 / 2 = x

Divide 2 / 2
6 + 0 + 1 = x

Combine like terms: 6 + 0 = 6
6 + 1 = x

Combine like terms: 6 + 1 = 7
7 = x

Solving
7 = x

The answer is7. Follow the rules of P.E.M.D.A.S.

I still say if you are supposed to do addition before subtraction, then it's 0 + 1 = 1 and then 6 - 1 = 5.

P  : No Parenthesis

E : No Exponents

M : 1 X 0 = 0

D : 2 / 2 = 1

A : 0 + 1 = 1

S : 6 - 1 = 5

1. You Have to start in the beginning and solve in order.  You cannot separate them because it does not have (). Answer is 1.

6 - (1 x 0) + (2 / 2) = 6 - 0 + 1 = 7

Funny how people think they can just ignore the rules of mathematics and come up with 1. You can't just go left to right, it isn't a reading assignment, it's math. Different rules than reading.

No no no no no no no the answer is NOT 5 nor is it 1. The answer is 7. Basic arithmetic solved with order of operations. Addition and substraction have same precedence, thus you solve them from left to right.

what ever happened to the rule: Any number multiplied by zero is zero?

If you follow PEDMAS subtraction would be last....
by
The answer is 5. The rules for the order of mathematical equations PEMDAS, Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. There for from the original problem we do the multiplication to get6-0+2 / 2, then division to ger 6-0+1, then addition to get 6-1, then subtraction ending with an answer of 5.  This is not like a book you might read the problem from left to right but to get the correct answer you must perform the calculations according to PEMDAS.  The answer is 5.
by
It is not 1 or 0 or 2 or 5 it is 7.

In the order of operations P E M D A S is, indeed the proper way to solve this problem. The only problem a lot of people seem to be running into is when it comes to the "multiplication and division" and the "addition and subtraction" part of it.

Those steps do not mean to "literally" perform multiplication first and then division and likewise does not mean addition and then subtraction. That would be breaking the rule of "Left to Right"  in situations where you run into division first and then multiplication. Those two rules mean:

1.  multiplication and division have the same precedence -- work left to right.

2.  addition and subtraction have the same precedence -- work left to right

Knowing this:  6-1*0+2/2 works out to:  6-0+1 (1*0=0 and 2/2=1 working left to right). The next part is (working left to right) read as "six minus zero plus one" which ends up being 7.
by Level 1 User (140 points)

The answer is 7 according to the PEMDAS rule.

AND, straight from Wikipedia

"These mnemonics may be misleading when written this way, especially if the user is not aware that multiplication and division are of equal precedence, as are addition and subtraction."

The M and D are equal to each other, so you do them in left to right order but before any addition or subtraction. The A and S are also equal to each other, so they are done next in left to right order.

6-0+(2/2)

by
6 - 1 x 0 + 2 / 2

Using the BODMAS rule :-

Step 1 - do division ( 2 /2) = 1

Step 2 - do multiplication (1 x 0) = 0

Step 3 - { Now, 6 - 0 +1 (we got this from  step 1 and step 2)}

Step 4 - (answer )= 5 ( by simple calculation)
by Level 3 User (3.9k points)

7. Following BEDMAS (or PEMDAS depending on where you live) You first look for brackets (or parenthesis). There are none.
Next you look for exponents. There are none.
Next you do multiplication and division from left to right as these have the same priority.
So 6-0*1+2/2 becomes 6-0+2/2 which becomes 6-0+1.
Finally, you do addition and subtraction.
So 6-0+1 becomes 6+1 which becomes 7.

seeing all the answers here being debated is like the postings on facebook. The pitfall here is that people THINK they know the intended formula groupings and depending on their spin they come up with 7,6,5,3.5,4 as well as negative numbers

Do you see it as (6-1x0)+(2/2)...? then your answer is 1--same as left to right basic step calculation to see if a first grader can follow along type of math problem

another is (6-1)x(0+2) /2 = 5 as some people are getting

and 6-(1x0)+(2/2) for the popular 7

I've seen many opinions and the one i like is in the absence of any directions of brackets & ordering you DO solve it left to right and the answer should be 1.

I know..math is supposed to be exact..but you can have multiple outcomes to this problem..try this...put the problem inot a calculator as a continuos calculation..you will likely get 7 (again, depending on how the calculator was programmed) use the same calculator and hit enter between functions---you will get a 1
by
How does one get 3.5 out of this problem???

6-1x0+2/2 = 7. The answer is not 2, although it may easily appear to be. This is an example of the importance of the “order of operations”.

The impulse may be to work the problem left to right, just like reading words on the page. If solved that way, the solution becomes:

6-1 = 5
5x0 = 0
0+2/2 = 1 (or 0+2 = 2, then 2 / 2 = 1)

However, the laws of mathematics require a certain order to be respected when there are multiple operations in one equation. As more operations are introduced (exponents, etc.) the order of operations lengthens as well.

For this one, only a couple steps are needed. Instead of working the problem left to right, the proper method is:

First—solve all multiplication and division from left to right. So, 1x0 becomes 0 and 2/2 becomes 1. Now our problem is: 6-0+1 = ?

Second—do all addition and subtraction from left to right. 6-0 is 6. Add 1 to get 7.

by

6-0+1

6-(0+1) ??????????? What happened there? You cannot insert parens arbitrarily like that when it breaks the order of operations. You changed the problem. Let's get a step back:

6 - 0 + 1 = ?   Don't forget, addition and substraction have same precedence, which means you solve them from left to right. You solve 6 - 0 first, it then becomes:

6 + 1 = ?

7

As multiplication and division are required to be handled first, the problem is easier to read thusly:

6 - (1 x 0) + (2 / 2) = 7

ORDER OF OPERATIONS: Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division ADDITION Subtraction 6-1*0+2/2 6-0+2/2 6-0+1 6-1 5 I am a college student and will admit it had me stumped at first as well as I initially got 7, but just because the multiplication and division is done does not mean you through out the order of operations! ADDITION happens BEFORE subtraction!
by

Order of operations... Use BEDMAS: Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Therefore.

6-1*0+2/2 =
6-1*0+1 =
6+0+1 =
6+1 = 7

by

In all the calculator sites pointed above, you can never enter the equation as a whole, you need to do it sequentially; this is wrong. The equation has to be taken as a whole. Try it in Google, it will give you the correct answer which is 7.

I must also correct the collegian who pretends that addition happens before substraction. This is false and misleading. Here I quote Wikipedia: "These mnemonics may be misleading when written this way [reference to PEMDAS], especially if the user is not aware that multiplication and division are of equal precedence, as are addition and subtraction. Using any of the above rules in the order "addition first, subtraction afterward" would also give the wrong answer.". This cannot be clearer. Addition and substraction have same precedence, thus, in the equation 6-0+1, you solve 6-0+1 sequantially: 7.

Here’s a story about six friends who wanted to form a math club. Their names were: Jack, Bob, Bill, Rick, James and Dave. One day, Jack got fed up of all the numbers and decided to leave. The others decided to multiply the number of members by the number of hairs on their head. Unfortunately, they were all bald and therefore, had to leave the club. The math club now consisted of five non-existing members. Two pedestrians, one named Joe and the other one named Steve, saw the club and decided to join. They read the club’s log cataloguing its history and past members. They then acknowledged the fact that they were the two newest members. Joe was a fan of Pythagoras and wanted to make him the club’s mascot. Steve was more of an Archimedes guy. They then decided to split the club in half and form two distinct clubs. Joe stayed in the original club, remaining the only member to this day.

THIS is why I was horrible in math.

There are no parentheses and therefore the rules apply that multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction.  It doesn't matter in which order you do the multiplication/division or addition/subtraction.

We must therefore do the multiplication  1*0 = 0,

and do the division  2/2 =1.

This leaves us with 6-0+1 = 7.

If you start using parentheses you will get different answers, but here are no parentheses in the question and therefore the answer can only be 7.

by
=dont listen to the 5.  The 6-0+1.  Yea work left to right so  6-0=6  6+1 = 7..
by

7.

PEMDAS

Parenthesis If something is in parenthesis () or {} or [] do it first before all else.  Doesn't apply here so we ignore that step.

Exponents: There are no powers in this problem so we ignore this step as well, otherwise you would solve all exponents in the problem next.

MD: Multiplication and Division: Do these in order from left to right.  Multiplication and Division hold the same amount of importance in Order of Operations, so the convention is to do them from Left to Right in the order that they appear.

AS: See above but for Addition and Subtraction.

6-1*0+2/2

so 1*0 (since it's the first MD left to right) =0

6-0+2/2

then 2/2 (since it's the only MD left to us) = 1

6-0+1

then AS from left to right.

the answer is 5 you tards!!!!!!!!!!!

6-1x0+2/2

work with the parenthesis first.

so the equation should look like this now.

6-(0)+2/2

then work with the division.

6-0+1

(2/2=1)

so now you have

6-0+1=7
by
I believe that the problem would actually read like this.

6-(1*0+(2/2)=5

I was very good in Algebra, but it has been many years (25) since I tried to solve these types of problems.
by
6-1*0+2/2

= 6-1*0+1

= 6-0+1

You must use BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtractions)

6 - 1 x 0 + (2 / 2)

= 6 - (1 x 0) + 1

= 6 - (0 + 1)

= (6-1)

= 5

by
PEMDAS
-1*0=0

2/2=1

6+1=7
by

WHY THE ANSWER IS NOT 5:

Let's show that 6-0+1 does not equal 5.

If you believe 6-0+1=5 then:

6-0+1=5

6-0=5-1

 6-0=4

 6=4

Then if you admit that 6 is not 4, you must admit that 6-0+1 is not 5.

ANOTHER PROOF:

By giving precedence to addition over substraction you will get:

6-1*0+2/2=6-(1*0+2/2)

Let's re-develop the right part and check if it's correct:

6-(1*0+2/2)=6-1*0-2/2

I believe you saw what has changed here:

6-1*0+2/2 is not 6-1*0-2/2

ABOUT SUBSTRACTION:

A substration is an addition of a negative number. Hence:

6-1*0+2/2 can be written 6+(-1*0)+2/2

So you can, as you want, substract first or add first. Whatever will do.

ANOTHER CONSIDERATION:

Using a basic calculator, which does not allow to input the whole calculation at once, is like adding some parenthesis in the calcuation at every step.

So, instead of getting the result of 6-1*0+2/2 you will get the result of (((6-1)*0)+2)/2.

Let's check the last one:

(((6-1)*0)+2)/2

=((6-1)*0)/2+2/2

=(6*0)/2-(1*0)/2+2/2 which is not quite the same as 6-1*0+2/2

THUS, THERE IS ONE AND ONLY ONE ANSWER...

...which is:

6-1*0+2/2

=6-(1*0)+(2/2)

=6-0+1

=6+1

=7

intermediate problems 4x+5+y=5
