The second of two numbers is 10 more than 3 times the first.  Their sum is 70.  Find the numbers?

1) x = 3y + 10

2) x + y = 70 or x = 70 - y

substitute:

70 - y = 3y + 10

60 = 4y

y = 15

using eq(1):

x = 3(15) + 10 = 55

check using eq(2):

55 + 15 = 70
