5x + 3 = 2x + 6

So we want to find out what 'x' equals.

To do this for your equation we can subtract both sides of the equation by 2x :

5x + 3 = 2x + 6

5x + 3 - 2x = 2x + 6 - 2x

3x + 3 = 6

Now we can subtract both sides of the equation by 3 :

3x + 3 = 6

3x + 3 - 3 = 6 - 3

3x = 3

So now to find out what 'x' equals we can divide both sides of the equation by 3 :

3x = 3

(3x)/3 = 3/3

x = 1                                             This is the solution. smiley
