whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other side as well

Start by adding y to both sides

x-y=8

+y     +y

the y on the left side cancels and you are left with

x=8+y

now you need to subtract 8 from both sides

x   =  8+y

-8     -8

this gives you

x-8=y
