- 9x² + 12x - 4

First it might help to take out negative 1.

- 9x² + 12x - 4

= - (9x² - 12x + 4)

Now, by looking at the possible factors of 9 and 4 you can find a factored equation that will give this answer.

So the answer is:

- (9x² - 12x + 4)

= - (3x - 2)(3x - 2)

= -(3x - 2)²            smiley
