When Mr. Smith took his 2 children to the zoo, their tickets cost $8.75.  The next family in line was mrs. Jones with grandpa and the 5 Jones children.  Their tickets cost a total of $19.75.  How much does the zoo charge for each adult and for each child?

a +2c=8.75

2a +5c=19.75

first equation x( -2):-2a +4c =17.50

adding:c=$1.75 for a child's ticket

a+2(1.75)=8.75

a+3.50 =8.75

a=$5.25 for an adult ticket
