I'm trying to locate zeroes, maximums, and Minimums using a TI-83 plus calculator, but when i enter 2nd trace, I get an error?

As long as you don't have any programs installed on the calculator, you might try resetting the ram. Sometimes setting get messed up and cause problems. Here is a link on how to do that. Just remember, it will erase any data or programs you might have on the calculator.
