Change denominator to 12's.  9/4=27/12 multiply numerator and denominator by 3.

-1/3=-4/12 multiply numerator and denominator by 4.

So 27/12 + -4/12 =27-4=23: leave the 12ths alone because that is what you do when you add or subtract fractions.

Answer: 23/12
