5x+9y=-14 8x+3y=-30............ linear equations
what is the answer that plugs into x and y for each?

Multiply the second equation by 3

3 * (8x + 3y) = 3 * -30
24x + 9y = -90

Subtract that from the first equation

    5x + 9y = -14
-(24x + 9y = -90)
--------------------------
 -19x        = 76
-19x = 76
x = -4

Use that in the second equation to find y

8(-4) + 3y = -30
-32 + 3y = -30
3y = 2
y = 2/3

Put both values into the first equation

5(-4) +9(2/3) = -14
-20 + 6 = -14
-14 = -14

We have x = -4 and y = 2/3
