Well, if you have 200 miles, that's like 2 sets of 100 miles each, right?
Then, you have 2 miles you want to take away from them, right?
So, remember how 100 percent is like 100 cents making a dollar?
Remember how 1 cent from the dollar is similar to 1 mile from each 100 miles?
It's the same principle!
The 2 miles you are taking from the 200 miles are 1 percent of the 200 miles.
Can you see that?
1 percent of 100 = 1
1 percent of 1000 = 10
1 percent of 10,000 = 100
So, if you have 200 miles and take 2 miles away, you are taking 1% of the miles.
An easy way to 'check your math' is:
Multiply the 2 miles by the 100-mile unit. See? You have your 200 miles back!
