Problem: what is the value of x and y?
There are two similar triangles the first triangle has the number 13 on the left side the number 12 on the right side and 5 on the bottom and on the second triangle it has x on the left y on the right and 10 on the bottom.

Because they are similar triangles, we can set up ratios between the
various sides.

Left side and bottom: x/13 = 10/5  x/13 = 2  x = 2 * 13   x = 26
Right side and bottom: y/12 = 10/5   y/12 = 2   y = 2 * 12   y = 24

These happen to be right-triangles, as seen with the following calculations:

First triangle:
13^2 = 12^2 + 5^2
169 = 144 + 25
169 = 169

Second triangle:
26^2 = 24^2 + 10^2
676 = 576 + 100
676 = 676

Answer: x = 26, y = 24
