If each edge of the cube will be made up of 4 smaller cubes, how many cubes in all will be needed?

I need help with this i think its just volume but i dont know!! thx

you will multiply the number of sides of the cube (6 sides) by the number of smaller cubes needed to cover each side (4) = 24.  if it the EDGES of a cube then there are 12 edges x 4 = 48.   each answer does not include the original cube.
