Given: 9/10 - 1/2 =
We can't add or subtract fractions with different denominators.
Only fractions with the same denominator can be added or subtracted.
Simply add or subtract the numerators.

First, find the least common multiple (LCM) of both denominators.
LCM takes the place of those different denominators and makes them identical.
LCM of 10 and 2 is 10, since 10=2x5, that is: prime factors of 10 and 2 are 2 and 5.
The denominator 2 is replaced by 10.

Thus, 1/2 can be rewritten by multiplying both numerator and denominator by the same
factor,5.  And the product is equivalent to 1/2, since 1/2 is just multiplied by 1 (=5/5).
We have: 1/2=1/2 x 5/5=(1x5)/(2x5)=5/10

Here, we have two fractions, 9/10 and 5/10, with the same denominator,10,
so the question can be rewritten and calculated: 9/10 - 1/2 = 9/10 - 5/10 = 4/10

To reduce the fractoin, 4/10, to its lowest term, factor both numerator and denominator by
their prime factors, then cancel the common factors out: 4/10 = (2x2)/(2x5) = 2/5

Therefore, the answer is: 9/10 -1/2 = 2/5

4/10 or 2/5

The answer is 4/10. In order to substract fractions, you have to find a common number. 1/2 is equal to 5/10. Therefore all we have to do is 9/10 - 5/10 (9-5) and the answer is 4/10. (Or 2/5)
