The first step is to get rid of the parenthesis by mutliplying the + into the -5

a positive times a negative gives you a negative so you can rewrite this like this

-12-5

if you are on the number line at -12 and you move 5 spots in the negative direction you will be at -17  Here is a visual representation that might help you understand.
