6x -  5 = 37    ( add 5 to both sides)

6x        = 42   (divide both sides by 6)

  x         = 7

The answer to this question you first add five to the 5 that is subtracting. Then you add five to thirty seven because whatever you do on one side you do to the other. Now you have the equation 6x=42. Next you divide the 6x by 6 and the 6's cancel eachother out. Then you divide 42 by 6 which is seven. So then you are left with::

x=7
