how do you solve x<x+5<2x+9

There are two inequalities here,

x < x + 5   and   x + 5 < 2x + 9

The 1st inequality is obviously true for all x, so we can ignore it.

The 2nd inequality is, x + 5 < 2x + 9

subtract x from both sides, to give

5 < x + 9

subtract 9 from both sides

-4 < x, or

x > -4   (which also satisfies the 1st inequality

Answer: x > -4
