I need to translate this expression into an equation.

The product P of a number y  and one and a half times that number.

Let us try to rewrite what you already have into mathematical terms.

The product = a number  and one and a half times that number.

The product = a number  and 1 1/2  times that number.

The product =  and 1 1/2  times y.

The product =  and 1 1/2  * y.

The product =  and (3/2)*y

Now, here the product means multiply, so

The product = y * (3/2)*y

The product = (3/2)*y*y = (3/2)*y^2

Answer: P = 3y^2/2
