If R is 1/6 and B is 1/3 and Y is unknown we break it up into an addition problem.

R + B + Y = the whole

1/6 + 1/3 + Y = 1

Now we need a common denominator.

1/6 + 2/6 + Y = 6/6

Subtract the known amounts from both sides to get Y:

Y = 6/6 - 1/6 - 2/6 = 3/6

Reduce the fraction:

Y = 3/6 = 1/2
