How do I multip;y these? (y+1)(y-3)

Use a process called cross multiplication.

First, multiply the two terms at the left side of
each parenthesss, the two y terms.

y * y

Then, multiply the right term in the left parentheses
by the left term in the right parentheses.

1 * y

Now, multiply the left term in the left parentheses
by the right term in the right parenteses.

y * -3

Last, multiply the two terms at the right
side of each parentheses, the two constants.

1 * -3

You have y * y + 1 * y + y * -3 + 1 * -3

Finish any multiplication, addition or subtraction.

y^2 + y - 3y - 3

y^2 -2y -3
