3(-4x + 2) = 12

times out the bracket:

 

-12x + 6 = 12

then minus 6 from both sides:

 

-12x = 12 - 6

-12x = 6

 

then divide both sides by -12:

 

x = 6/(-12) = -(1/2) = -0.5
