6 1/4 + 8 4/10=

I add the six and 8 to give 14 then leave this to one side for the minute to deal with the fractions.

1/4 + 4/10 ---> do the bottoms of the fractions multiplied by eachother, 4*10 is 40.  Then for the first one, multiply it by the second bottom number ie 1*10=10 so this fraction is 10/40

then the second one do the top number multiplied by the bottom number of the first one ie 4*4=16 so this number is 16/40

16/40 + 10/40 can now be added because the bottom number is the same.

16+10 is 26 so its 26/40 which can be simplified to 13/20.

Dont forget the 14 from the start though!

Final answer is 14 + 13/20
