To convert 8 4/5 to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number through by the denominator, and add it to the numerator, to move it above the denominator:

8 4/5

= (8 x 5 + 4)/5

=(40 + 4)/5

=44/5

You can check this here (although the site does convert the result back to its proper form again)
