3x + 2 = 7

subtract 2 from both sides

3x = 5

divide by sides by 3

x = 5/3

if you need a decimal then 3 goes into 5 once with 2 remaining so x = 1 2/3

2/3 = .66666666666 (repeating)

so x = 1.6666666666(repeating)
