Fractions can be added only if they have a common denominator. In your problem,
that would be 8. Multiply 1/2 by 4/4, and multiply 3/4 by 2/2.

1/2 + 3/4 + 3/8 = ?
4/8 + 6/8 + 3/8 = ?
(4 + 6 + 3)/8 = 13/8
