a). 4x - 2y = -4

b). 7x - 2y = -13

subtract b). from a).

  4x - 2y = -4

- 7x + 2y = 13

-------------------

-3x = 9

x = -3

sub back into a).

4*(-4) - 2y = -4

-16 - 2y = -4

-2y = 12

y = -6
