     14 - (2q+5) = -2q+9
1.) Distibute the negative in front of the parenthesis
     14 - 2q - 5 = -2q+9
2.) Add "2q" to both sides
     14 - 5 = 0q + 9
              or
     14 - 5 = 9 (because the "q" was cancelled out)
3.) Combine like terms (subtract the 5 from 14 on the left)
     9=9

It is correct because 9 does equal 9.
