With absolute values there are two parts.

First part:  Just remove the absolute values symbol

| x | > 1

x > 1

Second part:  Remove the absolute value, flip the > symbol, and change the + or - sign of whatever is on the other side

| x | > 1

x < -1

Answer:  x < -1   or   x > 1
