change both to improper fractions

2 4/5 = 2(5) + 4 = 14/5

1 4/10 = 1(10) + 4 = 14/10

14/5 needs to have a denominator of 10

so (14/5)(2/2) = 28/10

then 28/10 - 14/10 = 14/10

divide both by 2 and 14/10 = 7/5 which is 1 2/5
