change each to improper fraction  7 2/9 is 7(9) + 2 = 65/9

2 2/3 is 2(3)+2 = 8/3

need a common denominator of 9 so 8/3(3/3) = 24/9

then 65/9 - 24/9 = 41/9

since 41 and 9 do not have any common factors>1, the final answer is 41/9
