x^2 + 2x + 56 can't be factored.*

If you plug it into this thing called the quadratic formula you get this:

(-2+-sqrt(4-4(1)(56)))/2

(-2+-sqrt(4-224))/2

(-2+-sqrt(-220))/2

You can't do the square root of a negative number, so there's no solution.

* Assuming, as an algebra student, you haven't encountered things like complex math, i = square root of -1, etc..
