The 4x hits each thing in (x^2 - 2x +1), then the +3 hits each thing in (x^2 -2x +1), like this:

4x ( x^2 - 2x +1 ) + 3 ( x^2 -2x +1 )

4x^3 -8x^2 + 4x   +   3x^2 -6x + 3

4x^3 -5x^2 -2x +3
