(-6 x^8 y) (x^9 y^5)

same as:

(-6 x^8 y^1) (1 x^9 y^5)

-6 * 1 = -6

The exponents add, so you get

x^(8+9) = x^17

y^(1+5) = y^6

The answer is:

-6 x^17 y^6
