let's use the substitution method: replace 4y in the first equation by x-1, because y= x-1 according to the second equation, right?

8x-4y=1

8x-4(x-1)=1

8x-4x+4=1

4x+4=1

4x=-3

x=-3/4

find y from y=x-1

y=-3/4-1=-1  3/4
