The median of these numbers is 84.5 . Due to the fact that there is an even amount of numbers there is no definitive median. To find the median you must put the numbers in order then cross on off from both sides. once you get to the 2 in the middle you add then and divide by to and you get 84.5

(85+79+82+90+84+87)/6=84.5

(85+79+82+90+84+87)/6 is the mean, not the median.  In this case they both end up with the same values, but if the numbers had been 86, 79, 82, 90, 84, 87, then (86+79+82+90+84+87)/6 would not generate the median.
