It doesn't matter whether the answer will be positive
or negative. Just follow the procedures.

14 + (3 x ?) = 8
Because you have used an "x" for multiplication,
I'll make the unknown "r"
14 + (3 x r) = 8
14 + 3r = 8
3r = 8 - 14
3r = -6
r = -6/3
r = -2

The equation becomes
14 + (3 x -2) = 8
