3/8 + 1/9 =
adding andsubtracting fractions

Adding and subtracting fractions requires
a common denominator for the fractions. If you
multiply the first fraction by 9/9 and the second
fraction by 8/8, you will then have two fractions
with a common denominator. I'm sure you can
see that you are multiplying both fractions by 1,
so the value of the fractions won't change.

(3/8) * (9/9) + (1/9) * (8/8) =
(3 * 9) / (8 * 9) + (1 * 8) / (9 * 8) =
27/72 + 9/72 = 36/72
36/72 = 1/2
