Problem: How do you answer a problem with more than one variable?
42x+23=31y+64
Because you have only one equation, the best you can do is solve
for one variable in terms of the other.
Solve for x in terms of y:
42x + 23 = 31y + 64
42x + 23 - 23 = 31y + 64 - 23
42x = 3y + 41
42x/42 = (3y + 41)/42
x = 3/42 y + 41/42
x = 1/14 y + 41/42
Solve for y in terms of x:
42x + 23 = 31y + 64
31y + 64 = 42x + 23
31y + 64 - 64 = 42x + 23 - 64
31y = 42x - 41
31y/31 = (42x - 41)/31
y = 42/31 x - 41/31
