x − 2y = 14
x + 3y = 9
Just subtract one equation from the other , in order to eliminate one of these variables say you want to eliminate x.
x - 2y -x -3y = 14 - 9
- 5y = 5
► y = 5/ -5
= - 1
Now substitute y = -1 in one of the given equations. say in the first equation
x - 2y = 14
x = 14 + 2y
= 14 + 2( -1 )
= 14 - 2
= 12
so, x = 12 and y = -1 satisfies both equations
