The + does not mean you add 4. It should be displayed; 4x4 4x4 4-4x4=240

Order of Operations:

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=

Multiplication and Division, left to right:

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)=

16+16+4-16=

Then Addition and Subtraction, left to right:

32+4-16=

36-16=20

by
(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)

16+16+4-16

36-16 = 20

pattern of numbers is what is apparent and prevails.  If 4X4 is 16 on the first equation then it has to be consistent in the other two entries of 4X4 as well.  The correct answer is 20.

There doesn't need to be parentheses in order for you to answer it correctly. You always do multiplication before you do addition & subtraction!

4x4 (=16) +4 (=20) x4 (=80) +4 (=84) -4 (=80) x4 = 320
by
its 320
by
According to what I learned in A level maths the answer should be 20
by

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=320

by
if u were to throw parenthese in the problem u would come up with different answers.

for example this:

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)=

16+16+4-16=

32+4-16=

36-16=20

Or this:

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-4x4=

16+16+4-4x4=

32+4-4x4=

36-4x4=

32x4=128

Anyone can throw in parenthese wherever. If the problem doesnt have them to show you what to do first, then you do the problem as is. It's a number sentence not order of operations.

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=?

4x4=16+4=20x4=80+4=84-4=80x4=320

Answer should be 20.  Even though there are no brackets, one needs to keep the 'Order of Operations' in mind.  So first, you multiply as indicated, then divide as indicated, add as indicated and then finally subtract.

This gibberish then becomes 16 + 16 + 4 - 16 which yields 20.  Ho hum.

(4x4) + (4x4) +4(-4x4) is this an incorrect way of doing the brackets ?

(16) + (16) (-16x16)

32 + (-256)

-224

why is this wrong ?

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=20

4x4+4x4+4-4x4= 16+16+4-16= 32+4-16= 36-16=20

In this problem there are three operations. x, +, and -. You do all the multiplication first. Then the addition. Then the subtraction. See above. PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is used to remember Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.
4x4 + 4x4 + 4 - 4x4 = ?
16 + 16 + 4 -16 = ? (the 16 - 16 cancel each other out)

16+4 = ?
20 = ?

20 is your answer.

it is 320

too easy

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)=?

16+16=32+4=36

36-(4x4)=

36-16=20
by

1.

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=

(4x4)+(4x4)+(4-4x4)=

16+16+0=32

by

4x4+4x4+4-4x4

4X4=16

16+4=20

20X4=80

80+4=84(Don't really need to do this one because u -4 so it equals the number u had)

84-4=80

80x4

Break it down

8x4=32 Place the x10 back on and your awnser

is 320

Follow up question (accepting the answer is 20): how would one write the same equation with the solution of 320? Would you add parentheses/brackets in key locations? Please write out. Thank you.

by
320 is wrong because they worked it out left to right.
4x4 + 4 x 4 +  4  -  4   x  4  = 320 WHICH IS SO WRONG
 (16) (20) (80)(84)(80)
4*4+4*4+4-4*4=16+16+4-16=16+4=20
by
Its a simple order of operations question. First do any parentheses and exponents (but there aren't any of thise so we need to skip to the next step), then do any multiplication or division from left to right (this is where we would multiply the 3 pairs of 4's), and finally add and subtract from left to right. So now we have 16+16+4-16 (because we multiplied first), now we can add 16 to 16 (32+4-16) add 4 (36-16) and finally subtract the final 16 to get 20.
